Team spit over an old Alchemist beat from DJ Whoo Kid's new mixtape, LA: American Wasteland! Shits hot though. Tougher than the usual whispered vocals, Team represent hard for the Town, choppin it up about everything from the Mack to gold grills & cannibus clubs... Town shit, town bidness. You know the deal. Track is short but dope. Pretty crazy to see this on a mixtape from a NYC DJ down with G-Unit, it's good to see Team making some power moves.

Hoodstarz feat. Mistah F.A.B., Clyde Carson, San Quinn & Turf Talk - Grown Man On (Remix)
The one everyones been waiting on. Its a radio rip but what the fuck you gonna do when thats the only place you're gonna hear it? Grown Man On was a fucking anthem, and this remix just takes it to the next level of hyphyness. It keeps the same beat as the original, but hearing all these sick rappers spit over it makes me want to stop writing this bullshit description, throw on some stunnas, and jump kick the computer monitor. Better hide ya bitch. Hyphy Holidays!

Da Muzicianz feat. Federation - Go Dumb (Remix)
Oh what? Rick Rock produces the remix for one of the most hated on songs of 2005. If you don't know by now, Da Muzicians, affiliated with Yin Yang Twins, made a song called 'Go Dumb' which jacked Bay slang. After speaking with our ambassador, E-40, Da Muzicians management killed the original song. Federation spit alright, Rick Rock's beat is pretty fucking mainey, I'm still getting used to it-- shit sounds really different than anything else out there. And it's still weird to hear Da Muzicians spit on this, but I guess if hyphy gets more popular we'll just have to get used to other regions appropriating shit.

Caray Rose (feat. Mistah F.A.B.) - Hey
Produced by Traxamillion. The original was on Dopegame 3 with Frank Sticks rapping. I don't know if this was ever released, but its nearly the exact same song except with a Mistah F.A.B. verse. Personally, I think Fabby sounds better over this than Frank Sticks, his style just fits better with the smoothness of the track.

Exclusive, pimp! Produced by EA-Ski. This shit SLAP like no other. Balance spits cool, as usual, over a clean ass beat. Ski's production is on point, kinda poppy kinda funky, but with a catchy ass hook, "dun-dun-dundun-dun-dun." I'm feelin the little female vocal sample in place of a brass stab. Techno tom-tom synths occasionally pop out of the background. I like how EA-Ski layers his tracks; i've said it before and i'll say it again: Ski's production is simply elegant.

Ya Boy (feat. Jin) - 16's Wit Us (Remix)
Many of you might remember the original, which was a 2004 summer slumper. Updated for 2005, it's some cool little lyrical/punchline/battle rap shit over a hard ass beat that samples that Darth Vader song from Star Wars. Jin isn't my favorite rapper, but he and Ya Boy fit together well on this. Interestingly, the beat keeps going for a while after they finish rapping, so this is likely not the finished product. I'm assuming another Ya Boy verse will get added, and maybe have San Quinn spit on this too? Hopefully.

Clyde Carson - 32 Bars of Clarity
Another dope track from Clyde. Spittin some real shit, he calls out Shonuff and Balance, setting the record straight on why The Team doesn't fuck with Shonuff anymore. This fool also says, "ask the internet geeks why they crave for The Team? They respect what I bring." Hahaha Clyde Carson just called YOU out. Really though, dude is a dope lyricist and he proves it on this track. I'm not sure who produced this, but the beat has a definite RZA influence-- check the somber drums and wandering piano line.

Off Furious' album 'Breaking Point'. Furious' flow is pretty average, but he got Team for the chorus and they help out a lot, lending their whispery vocals. The beat itself is suprisingly dope: soaring saw synths, orientalist vocal sample, harsh new york style clap. Not a bad little blap.

Western Conference (feat. Federation) - Everything
Rick Rock SLAPPER. This is some MAINY shit. Bassy, assembly line kicks n toms off the same tip as the Da Dummy beat. The synths are just insane, underwater frequencies bubblin up nonstop, with myriad synthy 8-bit videogame progressions sliding out of the mix. Goldie Gold rips apart the chorus. You might recognize Western Conference from their song, "P World". They're not the best lyricists, but they got some catchy shit. Shit is so videogamey I love it. Certified hyphy slapper.

E-40 feat. Keak Da Sneak - Tell Me When to Go
Produced by Lil Jon. Word is, this is the first single off 40-Water's BME debut. Word is, this will be on BET/MTV. This shit slump like no other. This mp3 is a bit bass heavy so watch out if you have a sub cause shit gon' knock. E-40 spits fire, going dumb on some biblical hyphy shit, then bringing it back in time to give Keak a launchpad for his usual abstract and gutteral flow. The song closes with a chanting lesson in yay area slanguage. Word.

San Quin - Hell Yeah
Produced by EA-Ski. This is the first single off Quinn's upcoming album, The Rock. Ski production excretes minimal elegance, fuck yo' closed hi-hats. Quinn doesn't flex his best lyrically, instead keeping it simple off that commercial tip. Allen Anthony provides a nice little Pharrel-influenced soul here and there. This track is very commercial sounding, but it's nice.

Also, be sure to hit up KMEL DJ Big Von's site to get a FREE brand new mixtape from Bailey and J. Valentine - Hide Ya Bitch. Its got that 'Stay Fly' bay remix on there as well as the certifiable hit, 'Go Dumb'. And check out Lo Rez Pollution for a video of Bailey performing live!

The Team - Just Go
A Traxamillion slump, off the upcoming album, 'World Premiere'. Props to Kaijin for the high quality rip. I really like this beat, heavy reverb and delay make the synths soar out into space. The drums are typical Trax, its really the synths that set this shit off. The Team come strong, if not a bit uneventful, but do shine nicely on the cleanly produced chorus.

The Team (feat. Killa Klump) - Ex
Okay, this song was recently leaked, but I'm not sure when it's from, considering Killa Klump is on Rah Records and Moe Doe ain't really fucking with them. My guess is that it's a Dopegame 3 outtake. The song is all about thizz/ecstacy. The beat is kinda strange, with this tweaked out vocal sample consistent throughout. Klump's voice is pretty cool, but he needs to work on the lyrics. Not The Team's best effort either.

The Team (feat. Keak Da Sneak) - Stunna Mayne
This is off the upcoming Bay Area Block Stars Soundtrack. The beat is pretty chill, but i'm not feeling the guitar on the chorus at all, however, I do like it during the verses when it comes in and out-- it works well with The Team's laid back flow. Keak's crazy style juxtaposes nicely with The Team, although his voice is a bit overpowering here and he ends up stealing the show.

Mistah F.A.B. & Scweez - Stupid, Dumb, Hyphy
A lot of people have been requesting this one. It's the Bay Area Remix of Dem Franchize Boys - Oh I Think Dey Like Me. Scweez was in the group 3WayFunk, and is now doing his solo thing, this track will be on his upcoming album/mixtape. Its been getting some radio play. Hu-hu-hu-hu-hu-HYPHY, fun stuff.

Goldie Gold - Oh They Think They Hyphy
Here's Goldie Gold's take on that Dem Franchize Boys track. I actually like this one better than the Scweez & FAB one, Goldie is just a beast. If you listen to them back-to-back, it'll be obvious who comes more hyphy... Goldie's voice is the epitome of hyphyness. He comes really fucking strong lyrically here and just shows a mastery of the track. I'm assuming this will be on an upcoming mixtape.

Keeping with the theme of Bay Area remixes, here is a re-up of that sing-a-long masterpiece, J. Valentine feat. Bailey - Go Dumb.

Clyde Carson - How Beautiful
Okay, i lied. I said I wasn't going to post up Clyde's love song to weed. Well, here it is. Not the best quality, but it's certainly better than some of my previous radio rips. If you guessed that the track features a laid back groove you win nothing. I do, however, like that Clyde Carson's lyrical devotion to marijuana is more expositional than the typical "I Love Weed" track. In other Team news, the upcoming album, 'World Premiere', has been pushed back to July 2006. Yea, weak.

Balance (feat. Keak Da Sneak) - What Up (remix)
This is off a DJ Warrior mixtape, and its pretty dope. Balance once again shows off his versatility by spitting some hard ass raps that simply dwarfs Keak's flow. Short but sweet.

Killa Klump, Frank Sticks, and Rick Lew - Yadaboyz
This is an official leak from Rah Records. The track is on Dopegame 4, which drops sometime in February 2006. It's a pretty average Dope Game track, nothing really interesting going on lyrically or musically. Not a bad slump, but it feels a bit too Motif-y for my taste.

Mistah F.A.B. - Don't Know
From the Thizz Nation Vol. 3 compilation which dropped last week. Pretty funny, Fabby Davis imitates Keak's gutteral nonesense over a poppy beat. I've overheard some folks tripping out over Fab "dissing" Keak, but fuck that bullshit, it's called a JOKE.

DJ Mark Marcelo - The Ignant Mix
Got the whole mix in the mail the other day, and it's dope as fuck-- PURE ENERGY. DJ Mark Marcelo dropped a fucking bomb with this mix, providing us with the the most definitive document to date of the hyphy movement. Kicking it off is the '(Last Season) Hyphy Workout, an audio snapshot of previous years hit singles and slaps, when hyphy was begining to emerge as a distinct sound out of the New Bay marketing ploy. It's a great introduction, and really shows what this mix is all about-- exposing the listener to the new sounds of the Yay Area. This isn't your dad's mob music, this is high speed dance music replete with blappin sub-bass, soaring synths, sirens, whistles, and crazy ass bay area rap and slanguage.

You can check the tracklist below the review, but heres a quick summary: The brunt of the mix kicks off with Kinsmoke - Do the On One and from there into E-40 - Da Dummy, two of the most acclaimed hyphy tracks out right now. The mix ebbs and flows into blaps and slaps new and older, but all mixed with DJ Mark Marcelo's impeccable ear for keeping the mix live and hype. Theres a couple slow moments, but the mix is jam packed with so many tracks that even the laid back slumps quickly morph into the next high bpm blap. This shit is so danceable that even paraplegics get to giggin.

If you've been checking Get Stoopid for a while, you'll probably recognize, and have, a lot of these tracks. But you probably don't have all of them (shit, even I don't) and regardless-- you don't have them all mixed together in one Nonstop Dance Party 2005. For that, the mix is easily worth the price of 6 dollars. This shit slaps in the trunk, in a house party, or in your headphones/boombox while you goin dumb out the window of the yellow bus. The people that will truly benefit from this mix are those who are still unfamiliar with hyphy music. I've already heard numerous tales from people who have played the preview of the mix for their friends and converted occasional mainstream rap fans into sloppily giggin hyphy dance fiends.

This mix documents what is a source of pride for people all over the Bay Area: OUR music and OUR culture, and that is our gift to the world. News + Buncha NEW Shit

First off, if you haven't seen it yet (scroll down), I recently found out that DJ Shadow produced Keak Da Sneak and Turf Talk - 3 Freaks. At first it was mere rumor, but Chuy Gomez from 106 KMEL has gone on the record during today's morning show and announced that DJ Shadow did, in fact, produce 3 Freaks. I will keep the track online indefinitely, so just scroll down to get it.

Now, the bad news. The Team's highly anticipated album, "World Premiere", has been pushed back once again, this time to early Spring 2006, which is around the same time Clyde Carson's solo album will drop. Reason for the delay? Kaz Kayza, member of The Team, has a warrant out for his arrest and will be turning himself in shortly (if he hasn't already). No idea what he got hammed up for, but The Team is already spreading the word to FREE KAZ. It's not all bad, however, The Team are planning on releasing a "street album" sometime this Winter to keep fans sedated. Now, on to the new tracks:

J. Valentine feat. Bailey - Go Dumb AKA I'm Sprung (Bay Area remix)
If you listen to any clear channel radio station that plays rap or R&B you have no doubt been privvy to the T-Pain song "I'm Sprung". Well, heres the Yay Area's take on it. I'm going to tell you straight up: This Song Sucks. Having said that, it's a really fucking funny song and it serves to prove that irony is very fucking relative. This track is something that thugs would bump and sing-a-long with ironically, whereas hipsters would take it seriously and not want to be caught dead listening to it. Oh, and don't even bother listening to this if you're only interested in Bailey's flow, homeboy is on this song for all of 15 seconds.

J. Nash feat. Mistah F.A.B. & Clyde Carson - Beat That
J. Nash is a new R&B singer recently signed to Thizz Entertainment. This track is produced by Droop-E, and its nothing special really. Seriously, Droop-E needs to move on from that whistle, shit is sounding played out. Clyde Carson's flow steals the show, if you can call it that, its a pretty mediocre track all around.

Young Dru feat. Keak Da Sneak & Messy Marv - Yadida Whaa Whaa
Slumpin beat right here. Tight, sleazy synths over pounding bass drum/brass. Not really feelin the generic workstation strings though. Keak makes the song, utilizing his trademark voice to spit ferocious nonesense on the chorus. Young Dru spits hard but average, while Messy Marv comes tight.

Baby Face Assassins feat. Mistah F.A.B. & San Quinn - Dread Headz
Really hyphy slapper right here, three note synth stab progression, background bleeps, scraper skirtin sound effects. Mistah F.A.B. comes tight, but Quinn let me down on this one, it sounds like he wasn't even feeling the song-- "No dreads in my head its a low-cut ceasar". Regardless, its a knocker and is a nice little tune for a sunday drive, if that should involve ghostriding your skraper whilst your peers go dumb out the window.

You know how them playas set it off with their laid back flow. This time over a slow 808 bass beat tucked under chirpy, cling-clangy percussion and pitched-up synthy pads. I like to call this one a straight CLANGER. Also, I like to call you a beezy.

Clyde Carson - Twenty Fo's
Clyde, arguably the most lyrically gifted member of the Team, on the solo tip. Synth brass stabs and gritty, nearly detuned organs set the pace here. Sounds pretty dirty souf, but the organ strains out the pure trill to create something a bit more grimey.

Clyde Carson - Soul Glo
So chill it's comatose. Laid back flow, vocoded singing, drip-drop snapclaps, easy listening synths. Did you know that Clyde is off the same stoner tip as the Dude? You do now. And yes, he has the love song devoted to weed to prove it, but i'm not going to bless you with it-- blame this guy.

Keak Da Sneak (feat. Turf Talk) - 3 Freaks (Updated, see new post!)
~~I'm assuming this will be on Keak's upcoming album, Kunta Kinte.~~ The song is just crazy, synths on slow attack, bubbling out of the bass like a tar pit until they burst loose and escape on motorbikes. The chorus serves as a firm, robotic reminder of who we are listening to, then Turf chimes in with a plead for freaks. The drums sound like insects making noise, until they land on the windshield of the beat with a poppy handclap. I can't say enough about this song, I love it.

Mistah F.A.B. - Freestyle (Wake Up Show 9/16/2005)
Here's a freestyle recorded off the Wake Up Show, an infamous radio show that often features freestyle sessions. Mistah FAB claims to be the freestyle king, whether thats based on a quantitative or qualitative analysis, well... lets just say this track is 7 minutes long. However, there are portions where he definitely shines bright, and it is pretty fucking amazing that he can keep rapping off the top of his head for that long. Speaking of FAB...

Off the upcoming album, World Premiere, this isn't hyphy, but its a perfect example of The Team's ability to create hit songs. Its a very feminine song, ambient female r&b vocals join at the seams with twinkling piano over a slow 808 bass beat. Kinda cheezy, but cute.

Too Short - She Know What it Is
Unreleased, from his upcoming album. Nothing exceptional here, typical Short Dog vocals. Some other rappers on here that I can't ID. The beat has an old school feel to it, very clean kicks and handclaps, cowbells everywhere. It does have some hyphy sounding synths, but the beat is too slow to be hyphy. Putting this up for posterity more than anything, really.

Lay Low (feat. Federation) - What the Fuck?
This is the fucking slump of the week right here. Law Low is some up'n'coming 16 year old emcee from Vallejo, this song is from his album Deep Waters, which is out but nearly impossible to find. Regardless, this is a fucking BLAP. Federation spit hella hard, stealing the limelight. The beat is insane, a staircase of synths create pure energy.

Federation - We Ain't Wid That
I originally thought this was a Droop-E beat, but now this song is featured on Rick Rock's myspace page... No matter, its an interesting song, the vocals are mastered way higher than the beat, which is actually a good effect here. The beat is simple, a little bit bubbly but anchored with a three note synth progression and some crunchy drums lifted straight outta the Neptunes- 'Grindin' beat. This track is off the Yay Area's Most Wanted: Strikes Back mix cd that just came out. It took me a while to get into this, but now I'm feelin it.

Federation - Favorite Drug
This was ripped off KMEL back in 2003. It never appeared on the Fed's album or any mixtapes that I am aware of. Unfortunately its a clean version (does a dirty version exist?), but its a classic Rick Rock slapper that just shows off Rick's production skills. "Ricky got it sounding like a village in Kenya." No hi-hats, no snares-- just high pitched 'ethnic' drums and menacing synth brass.

Hoodstars (feat. Keak Da Sneak & San Quinn) - What It Do My Nig
This also sounds like a Droop-E beat, but again I have no confirmation. Its unreleased, though I'm assuming its going to be on the upcoming Hoodstars album which drops sometime in October. Its the clean version, but Keak and Quinn shine, taking on the first two verses (Keak does the hook as well). Playful sound effects and drums keep the beat simple but fun.

Hoodstars (feat. Keak Da Sneak) - Can't Leave Rap Alone
Sean T flips a slumpin beat and Keak just glides over it. Hoodstars do their best to overcome mediocrity, and manage to achieve that half the time. Sean T is the star here-- the drums keep the beat sounding like a traditional slap, but the plucked electric guitar intertwined with glittery synth chirps suggest a slightly more futuristic direction.

Mistah F.A.B. Exclusives

Mistah F.A.B. was on KMEL last night and previewed two new tracks, which I just so happened to record. They're off his upcoming album Yellow Bus Ryda which is set to drop "Novemberish". Apparently FAB is also at work on another album coming out after that, called The Furley Ghost. When asked if he would do any posthumous tracks with Mac Dre, FAB said he doesn't want to do "one of those Biggie put-together tracks" and that he "don't wanna keep capitalizin off [Mac Dre], thats for real." He also dropped some info about upcoming DVDs including Treal T.V. 2 which is gonna drop Nov. 22nd, and The Freestyle King DVD which features Fabby battling a bunch of others (most notably the rap-battle where he KO'd Jin at Hot Import Nights-- "in front of his people, literally" ... ). That drops sometime next month. Heres the new tracks:

Mistah F.A.B. - Metros and Chirpers
Produced by Droop-E, who's whistle seems fitting on a song about cell phones. The lyrics are straight silly, making fun of bad reception, phones falling out your pocket whenever you stand up, cracked screens, taking calls after 9, etcetera. Its a fast paced song, with a catchy hook.

Mistah F.A.B. - The Furley Ghost
Produced by Trackademics, who did a buncha tracks on FAB's Son of a Pimp album. "Let Dre get in your soul and lose control", The Furley Ghost is another take on the thizz dance, but this track opens it up so that anyone, even straight-edge cats, can get down because now its not about being Eeed out your skull, its about "dancing with your spirit". Which is really what the thizz dance was always about anyway, but people just assosciated it strictly with E because of the word "thizz". The beat slaps in a slow-motion-gangsta-stoner kinda way.

On the new Federation track-- I'll put it up later tonight, along with another older Federation track that never actually ended up appearing on any albums.

Dopegame 3 came out on tuesday, the third album from the bay supergroup which this time around focuses primarily on Frank Sticks and Killa Klump, both of whom can hold their own with their style. Keak, Lee Majors, and Verstyle only make one appearance each, while BA is on two songs. But no doubt this is pure Dopegame, the trend of thick juicy synths over firecracker beats continues. My two cents:

Frank Sticks - Shake Ya Face Up
If you haven't heard this one already, listen NOW. Traxamillion outta San Jose produced this, the single, and its fucking SLAAPPPIN. I already upped it a while ago, so this re-up is for those who missed it.

Keak Da Sneak, Frank Sticks, and Killa Klump - Nigga RAH
More Dopegame heat right here. This is the only track that Keak is on and he fucking runs it. Kill Klump is a new name, and I don't really know that much about him, but his voice is tough and he comes gangsta all over the whole album.

The Hoodstars - Grown Man On
This isn't Dopegame, but it is a new heater from Traxamillion. Its nice to see him continue to lay down dope beats after producing Keak's mega-hit Super Hyphie. Getting your grown man on basically means dressing up nice, the antithesis of white tees. Hoodstars, as usual, rap fair to middlin, nothin spectacular. The beat is real club, sounding like something Ciara should be on. Certified slump.

Having lived in San Jose for the past 5 years, its good to see the bay rap scene is fucking with cats down here cause Traxamillion's got heat and he'll continue to produce heat. On that San Jo tip, also check out my girl Marian Liu's blog (and podcast) over at the San Jose Mercury News website. She's the pop music writer there and has penned some informative articles on the local music scene (check out her recent interview with E-40).

BAY BRIDGES comp (ALL Droop-E production)

So, here it is, the new compilation from Sic Wid It records, "presented" by E-40, and featuring production from Droop-E on all 16 tracks. Its an interesting concept, but it just doesn't work. Droop-E's production is consistently elementary, with many tracks suffering from a serious lack of creativity, which gets really fucking repetitive. There ARE some slappers, but you've already heard them, notably: The Mossie - Get Ignant and E-40 - Da Dummy, which were previously posted up. Here are a few other choice cuts:

Tha Hoodstarz (feat. E-40 and Turf Talk) - Bullshit
Twiddly horn descends into slappin ass beat. Vocal sample prominently crushes into the drums, sounding like someone saying "bullshit" but compressed into more of a whoosh than a word. Synth brass comes in sounding like the doorbell of Dracula's castle. Vocal delivery is hard as fuck, but don't be fooled by the features, e-40 and turf talk are only on the chorus-- this is hoodstars' track.

Keak Da Sneak, PSD, and Mistah F.A.B. - Show Me the Deer Foot
Quite possibly the worst sexual allegory in a song title. I really like the beat on this one, its somehow downtempo but with bounce. No synth brass, and the whistle takes the backseat to clicks and pops and dings and hisses. I really think Droop-E should put more of a focus on making beats like this, as it allows him more room to experiment with.

Mistah F.A.B. (feat. (feat. Turf Talk, E-40, Droop-E, Keak Da Sneak, Mac Mall, B-Legit, G-Stack & The Jacka) - Super Sic Wit It (Remix)
This is NOT on the Bay Bridges compilation, but it is produced by Droop-E. This one's been on the radio too, it is, obviously, a remix of F.A.B.'s Super Sic Wid It, but featuring a whole bushel of bay area rap stars. Obviously, this knocks. The production is standard hyphy, but what keeps this from getting bogged down in repetition is the infectious chanting chorus and varied vocal delivery of F.A.B. et al.

the mossie are one of sic wid it's best kept secrets, and although their lyrics arent that fresh in this track, droop-E's production makes up for it-- this track is very slap, very hyphy with an infectious chorus and danceable groove. droopy's 'sound' is becoming more defined-- a barrage of shuffled kicks keep it steady for the whistles, vocal samples, and synth brass to fade in and out. e-40 comes clean tho-- "heart racin / i'm off a marijuana brownie / sloppy drunk / smashin through solano county / ambassador now / just think they usta try to clown me"

wow, this one surprised me. the beat is very very nice, its bouncey trunk funk as updated for 2005 with a higher bpm and techno whistles. e-a ski brings the heat with his lyrics, outshining keak (who still comes cool, but wow, ski did it proper on this track). 40 water is off in a league of his own tho, as he just comes fucking postmodern with it, spitting his most indecipherable lyrics in a looong time (its about time).

official leak courtesy of rick rock, catchy danceable little ditty with some nice studder synths over what sounds more like a traditional slap drum set than the ethnic drum hits he usually throws in. thanks to wayne&wax for that deconstruction of reggaeton because now i'm more aware of timbral changes in songs. case in point- if you listen closely you can hear different snares/claps used during the progression of this track.

Frank Sticks - Shake Your Face Up

this ones on the flipside of the super hyphie 12". dopegame member frank sticks raps fairly hard over a fairly hard track (to be honest, i can't wait til these mini new york handclaps go out of style). the synths are hard as fuck, but this track tries a little too hard to be hyphy, with that techno whistle again making an appearance (in a circular rhythm, which by the end of the track gets annoying as fuck). anyway, this track is getting played on some radio stations so i figured i'd flip it, even tho i feel its a bit too average.

brand new hyphie shit. kinsmoke is a new group that rick rock is putting out, goldie gold from the federation is in there too. this shit slaps hard- "Do the on one, Shake them dreads!" rick rock actually raps on this track yet still manages to keep it tight. rick excels at producing groups, throwing little surprises into the beat that play along with people's voices. my favorite track since da dummy, this is gangsta rave music.

Dope Game feat. Mac Dre - Out My Body

here it is, from dope game 2 album that just dropped. dope game is a bay area supergroup consisting of members Frank Stickemz, Keak Da Sneak, B.A., and Versatyle. BA dropped a solo album the same day as dopegame2. BA's shit is alright, its on a chilled out gangsta tip. but this track right here is hard, first of all you got mac dre (RIP), you got a pulsing lead synth sounding like classic techno over chugging hi hats and a surprisingly short handclap. according to this, dope game 3 should be out soon too.

This song has been getting a lot of play on the radio recently. Def my current fav to get hyphie to. E-40's son, Droop E, did the production and its a knocker, thumping bass drums painted over with a spazzed out, nearly atonal synth arpeggio. The chorus is so silly its borderline wack, but it works in a hyphie-as-a-dance-genre kinda way. And it really is, sometimes the lyrics can be dope, but really, hyphie is pure fucking dance music. this is rap on E. Theres another single out featuring 40 water, go get it from Cocaine Blunts right cherre, its Trillville, lil jon production, and its pretty fuccin bland. 40, of course, has the best verse on the track; trillville come dull as fuck.

heres another track thats burnin up the bay right now. san quinn, easily one of the best rappers in the bay, comes clean. i'd really like to see him get more popular, but his voice is so gruff and strained, i just cant imagine him getting any more popular than he already is, unless he pulls the odb card and plays on his strained ass voice. i just dont see that happening tho, as hes a pure lyricist. this beat trys hard to play to his gruff voice, and achieves that for the most part, with really dirty, almost orchestral synth stabs.

Keak Da Sneak - Super Hyphie

This ones been blowing up the bay for a couple months now, its definitely the current summer jam, ive read on forums that even las vegas has been showing this single some love. good to see a single from someone other than E-40 finally make it outside of northern california.

more thoughts about the whole hyphie scene, it seems to be a consolidation of the whole "New Bay" thing, Mac Dre's (RIP) nation of thizzlam, and accepted and completed by bay area veterans. Frontline came out of richmond repping this New Bay thing, supposedly making a new sound to try to get the bay out of a slump, they got a certified hit, "What is it" (thanks to E-A-Ski), but on the street the New Bay thing was just all-talk, it sounded like traditional bay slumpin mixed with roc-a-fella's Young Gunz. Fast forward a little bit, Mac Dre got murdered, everyones showing him and thizz entertainment love/respect, everybody's copying mac dre's steez, reppin the thizz face and whatnot. All of this came together at a time when Ric-Roc's beats were getting maximum exposure on kmel and 94.9, to create the hyphie scene as we know it. Its great to see the bay make shit happen, but i cant help but wonder whats going to happen with the real gangsta rappers like yukmouth, c-bo, etc. last year they were finally able to legitimately release the Thug Lordz album (it had been held up for a year due to contractual lawyer legal shit), but none of the album got any kind of play on local stations. well im going to show the real gangsta shit some love, check out this track from Thug Lordz, its a C-Bo solo and boy he lays it down real grimey over a harsh trunk-funk slumper.

Federation - Hyphy Remix (feat. Keak Da Sneak, E-40, San Quinn and Turf Talk)

So i'm kicking off this blog with the song that started the whole hyphie "scene". In an MTV news article, they describe hyphie music as the bay area's own genre ("California Krunk"), which isnt really true. It really is more of a scene than a genre, and even that is pushing it. The gangsta scene in the bay area is huge, and has its own distinct elements, the whole hyphie thing is basically the underground gangsta rap's attempt at wooing a more mainstream, nationwide audience. See, the bay area has had this stigma of being impotent when it comes to nationwide recognization of our rap artists. We had it big back in the day, but everyone know the bay doesnt get love outside of the bay anymore. The south, following in our footsteps of slangin' tapes and fostering a vibrant underground rap scene is the current favorite child of the mainstream.

But, for the past couple years, people in the bay have established an effort at reclaiming mainstream recognition. Ric Roc really brought the limelight back to the bay after fucking with tons of major artists, and now hes producing a whole slew of bay artists. When this song hit the radio in summer 2003, it blew the fucking spot up. This song is what got those kids hanging out of their cairs, driving down the streets with the doors wide open.

And yes, i'll be restructuring and working on the design of this blog, for now its just a template. deal.
